Do I Need An HDTV Antenna?

Written by admin on February 21st, 2009

If you are in the market for a new TV you may need an HDTV antenna. If you do not have a set top cable box or a satellite dish, in order to enjoy high quality HD programming, you will almost certainly need to buy an HDTV antenna.

What’s So Great About HDTV?

I have a friend who would tell you that he would never go back to a traditional television. He got his first HDTV a couple of years ago. He didn’t need an antenna because he upgraded his cable box to include a digital video recorder (DVR). This was so he could record programs without having to hook up a VHS recorder.

This HDTV was purchased during the baseball season, and I’ll never forget the story he told me of his first few minutes of watching. One of the players hit a home run. He couldn’t remember who it was, what teams were playing or even what ballpark they were in.

What he did remember about that first HDTV baseball game was, when the camera zeroed in on the guy who caught the ball, he not only saw the guy showing off the ball, he could also read the time on the guy’s watch. It read 3:45 p.m. That kind of clarity is just not available on a traditional low definition TV.

You Don’t Need Cable or Satellite to Get Local Programming

Virtually all of the regular broadcast channels that send analog signals out over the airwaves are also sending their digital high definition signals the same way. With an HDTV antenna, these high definition signals can be watched on your HDTV without incurring the expense or trouble of satellite or cable TV.

What Do I Need To Know About An HDTV Antenna?

Actually, calling it an “HDTV antenna” is a misnomer. What you are really looking for is an HDTV tuner. An antenna is a resonating piece of metal with certain electrical properties. It is true that some antennae are optimized for HD signals, so these are the antennae you should look for if picking up HD channels is important to you.

The United States has been divided into antenna zones by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). This is based on the way signals travel over the airwaves. So, an HDTV tuner, or antenna, that works in one part of your city may not be the best antenna for you.

By contacting the CEA you can determine which HDTV antenna is best suited for viewing in your area.
