Buying Brackets, Stands or Brackets for LCD and Plasma TVs

Look for evidence of sturdiness, such as dovetail joints. If shopping in a brick and mortar, check the display and give the stand a nudge to see how it responds. If shopping online, check reviews for complaints of faultiness. If a variety of materials will work well in your home, choose the sturdiest.

As far as materials, keep them to a minimum. If your room primarily contains wood, shop for wood of the same type. (In other words, if you started with maple, stick with maple.) Steel and glass pair well so if you started with one, the other will be a match. Keep within the same colour palette; though steel and brass are both metals, they don’t pair well.

As cabinets have grown to accommodate larger televisions, space diminishes. Shop for one that will keep an “open” feel to the space. An armoire or cabinet will visually eat a lot more space than a table. Colour is also important: dark will be more dramatic (particularly if the piece is large) so lighter is preferable.

Be sure to factor in the electronics that will need to be within a cables reach of the television: your DVD or Blu-Ray player, video game consoles, On Demand box, etcetera. These devices should have air circulating around them to prevent overheating; an open-backed cabinet or table is ideal. If you purchase an armoire or closed cabinet, drilling will be necessary both for air circulation and to route the cables to the TV and the cords to the outlet.

The new generation of LCD and plasma televisions are very slim so they don’t need cabinets that are very deep. So you can save room in your room.

If your family is large or you tend to have friends over to watch TV, a swivel stand is a wise investment so that the viewing angle can be easily adjusted to best accommodate all situations.

Wall mounts can dramatically increase usable space; be sure to purchase one that is adjustable, particularly if guest placement around the TV shifts often. Select one that is easy to adjust and does not require tools; if you need to adjust it often, you’ll want the process to be user friendly. Also, LCDs are particularly prone to glare issues so unless the room has indirect lighting and no window nearby, an adjustable mount can be necessary to tilt the television away from glare.

Remember that a wall mount is useless unless the wall can safely support the weight. If you’re not sure whether the wall is sturdy enough for this task, it is not worth the safety risk, for the welfare of your family as well as your television! Many stores offer wall mount services so this may be the route to go.

Think of all the TV components you’ve added in the last few years you’ll undoubtedly add more in the next few years. Factor this into your purchase decision. Don’t buy just enough space; allow room for expansion.
